The Resale Appreciation Myth in Polki Jewellery

Many jewellery buyers are told a reassuring story at the time of purchase: if you return or exchange the piece later, the jeweller will offer appreciation on value. On paper, that sounds comforting. In practice, the picture is often more complicated.

In many cases, what is presented as appreciation is simply the result of inflated pricing at the time of sale. The future number may look attractive, but the buyer may still be losing more value than they realise.

How this usually works

Some retailers build very high rates into the diamond or polki component of a piece at the time of billing. Later, when the client comes back for resale or exchange, they offer 70% to 80% of that component value and present it as a strong buyback or appreciation benefit.

The difficulty is simple: if the original valuation was overstated, then the later appreciation is not necessarily a real gain. It may simply be a partial return of an inflated number.

A simple example

Let us consider one pair of earrings.

A more realistic valuation

Gold: 8.94 gms x 5,000 = 44,700
Diamond polkies: 5.22 cts x 6,500 = 33,930
Diamonds: 1.15 cts x 13,500 = 15,525
Labour: 14.9 gms x 650 = 9,685

Subtotal: 1,03,840
Total after profit margin: 1,12,000

Now suppose gold rises from 5,000 per gram to 6,000 per gram, and the retailer offers a resale value equal to 80% of the purchase price.

Resale value: 80% of 1,12,000 = 89,600

So the buyer's value loss over time is:

1,12,000 - 89,600 = 22,400

That is a real cost, but at least the original purchase value was grounded more sensibly.

The inflated pricing model

Now let us see how the same earrings may be presented under an inflated billing structure.

Gold: 8.94 gms x 5,000 = 44,700
Diamond polkies: 5.22 cts x 15,000 = 78,300
Diamonds: 1.15 cts x 30,000 = 34,500
Labour: 14.9 gms x 650 = 9,685

Subtotal: 1,67,185
Total after profit margin: 1,80,500

Later, when the customer returns, the resale may be calculated like this:

Gold: 8.94 gms x 6,000 = 53,640
Diamond polkies: 80% of 78,300 = 62,640
Diamonds: 80% of 34,500 = 27,600

Total resale value: 1,43,880

At first glance, this looks impressive. The client may feel they are getting strong appreciation or excellent value protection.

But the actual value lost is:

1,80,500 - 1,43,880 = 36,620

So despite the more dramatic buyback number, the customer has actually lost far more.

What the customer is really seeing

A higher resale number does not automatically mean a better deal. If the original billing was inflated, then the later exchange or buyback benefit can appear generous while still leaving the client worse off overall.

That is why resale promises should never be judged in isolation. The real question is not, How much appreciation will I get later? The real question is, Was I charged fairly in the first place?

What buyers should ask before purchasing polki jewellery

What rate per carat is being applied to the polki?
What rate is being applied to the diamonds?
Is the pricing in line with the actual quality and market reality of the stones?
How exactly will resale or exchange be calculated?
Is the future value based on fair pricing today, or on an inflated invoice?

A transparent jeweller should be able to explain this clearly.

The more honest way to think about value

Polki jewellery should be bought first for its beauty, craftsmanship, heritage and emotional significance. Its financial value matters too, but that value should come from transparent pricing, not from an artificial appreciation story built on inflated rates.

A client is better protected by honest billing on day one than by a glamorous buyback promise later.

Final thought

In jewellery, numbers can be arranged to sound comforting. But real value lies in clarity. When a retailer promises appreciation, it is worth asking whether they are truly offering future benefit or simply disguising an expensive purchase made upfront.

At G K Ratnam, we believe clients deserve straightforward pricing, clear guidance and heritage jewellery they can buy with confidence.
